A Taste of Fall - Apple Chips

Apple picking is a Fall staple.  If you are anything like me, you pick boat loads of apples convinced that you need every single one of them.  An apple a day... you know the rest.  Every fall I find myself searching for new apple recipes to try.  This year I have found one that is unique, easy and perfect for excess apples (not to mention delicious for little tots). Apple chips are irresistible, and making them yourself saves you money and is a whole lot healthier!  

Apple Chips:

This yummy and healthy snack is an excellent side dish for toddler lunches, but can also be used on its own as an afternoon pick me up. They are best to make in bulk and can be saved in the freezer to use anytime. Because they are a chip and can be quite chewy, I recommend this for babies 12 months and up depending on the child’s chewing ability.


Ingredients: (amounts vary)

  • Apples, sliced thin
  • Brown sugar
  • Cinnamon


Preheat the oven to 225ºF. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper and set aside.

Take apple slices and brush with brown sugar and cinnamon (the amount of brown sugar and cinnamon is really up to you – I prefer to go light on the sugar and moderate to heavy on the cinnamon, but I’m a cinnamon person).

Place apple slices on cookie sheets spaced evenly and place in oven for 1 hour. After 1 hour, flip the apple slices and bake for another hour. Remove from the oven and let them cool and harden for approximately 20 minutes.

Cinnamon – This spice is another antioxidant that has powerful effects on health and metabolism.

** Although the brown sugar makes this snack super delicious, it may be eliminated for an even healthier choice for your child **


I have not given these apple chips to James too often, but when I do he really loves them.  I do make sure to give him small pieces because they are difficult to eat, but this will get easier as he gets older and for now they are teaching him how to chew something more difficult. The best part about them is he can snack on one without the trouble of having to put him in a high chair. This is a huge bonus for me.
