Learning to Love Running

I have never been good at running long distance. It simply is not a gift I was given, and for the greater part of my life I have hated running as a form of exercise. Growing up and throughout college I often heard people say things like, "Anyone can run. You just have to get going, and you can keep running forever."

Yeah -- I never quite got that. I would nod my head and say something like, "Oh, absolutely," but in reality I was probably thinking something more along the lines of are you insane? I can't even run a mile without feeling like I am going to die.

And it was true. I couldn't run a mile without stopping to walk. I would feel like my lungs were going to explode and that I had somehow managed to set my leg muscles on fire the burning was so acute. My inability to run long distance was not for lack of effort. I really did try, but my fear and humiliation held me back.

Generally I have always been good at sports, and I'm a natural sprinter, but distance running? Not for me.

Then I became a mom and realized that I don't always have time to go to the gym, or that my son won't nap and a ride in the stroller would do him good, or that if I have to go down to the river and throw one more rock into the water for my son to see I will literally lose my marbles. So, I started running.

Day by day, I am teaching myself to be a better runner.

And you know what? It's working.

I run 3 or more miles now up and down hills all while pushing a 30lb toddler in a hefty jogging stroller (oh, but the stroller is a dream). I push my self harder and further with each run, and I am conquering this thing. I am actually learning to love running.

I am heavily motivated by music and my Reebok Armband is an essential accessory to my running routine. I have also just gotten myself a new pair of Reebok's Classics for everyday use, which is another essential as a toddler-mom.
